The image of the Gyre is one which is prominent in Yeats's poetry.  It symbolizes the continuous motion which parallels the theme of Immortality.  Also, it represents the expansion of Irish art as the shape of the Gyre is firm and strong in its foundation and unpredictably expanding as it develops.
