O'Connell's devotion to his wife, Mary, was powerful.  When she died, he buried her in the ruins of the Abbey on his ancestral estate at Derrynane.  This estate, situated on the edge of the Iveragh Peninsula in Co. Kerry, was always a refuge for O'Connell from the trials of public life.
