Dunbeg Promontory Fort (Dingle Peninsula Trip)

distant view of Skellig Michael from Dunbeg Fort

Skelling Michael is an early Christian monastery, dating perhaps as early as the 6th or 7th century.  The monastery is situated 500 feet atop a rocky crag that juts out of the Atlantic, a full 10 miles from the Irish mainland.  The monastery continued to flourish up to the 13th century, and today there are remains of several beehive huts, a small church, and two oratories (similar to the Gallarus Oratory on the Dingle Peninsula).
