Western Ireland Tour, Day 4: from Innisfree to Clonmacnois
Our fourth day of travel through western Ireland, Thursday May 11, began in Sligo town. Our first stop was the legendary Lake Isle of Innisfree, where we contemplated Yeats's most famous poem and its relation to the actual landscape that inspired it. We realized that the actual island is rather small and, well, unspectacular. Clearly, Yeats was responding to a landscape of the mind, recollecting in his London exile the innocence and loveliness of his boyhood wanderings. {Click here for "The Lake Isle of Innisfree" poem}
