Croagh Patrick, "Ireland's Holy Mountain," in County Mayo.  Patrick is said to have spent 40 days and 40 nights fasting on the mountain in 441 A.D  The mountain had been a site of pagan worship for centuries. Today, thousands of penitents and pilgrims traverse each year in their bare feet up the path to the mountain top, a climb of roughly 2,500 feet.  The well-worn saints' path is visible in this image.

Patrick is said to have traversed nearly the whole of Ireland's countryside during his missions.  While modern scholars debate these facts, he is associated with numerous crucial sites in Ireland, including the Rock of Cashel and the Hill of Tara.
